Congregationalists do not consider Confirmation a sacrament, but we do believe in the spiritual value of Christian study as our children approach adulthood.
For this reason, Plymouth Church offers in-depth Confirmation training for those aged twelve or thirteen. Our goal is to encourage these young people to become full and knowledgeable members of our Church.
Confirmation at Plymouth typically follows one year of class study. Our curriculum is based on a program designed by the National Association of Christian Congregational Churches entitled Building Confirmation the Congregational Way. Students meet weekly the school year to study the Bible and the teachings and history of the Church.
Students may enter the Confirmation Class at any time. A decision on a case-by-case basis will be made about their readiness for membership. In general, students are expected to attend at least half the sessions and are required to do all of the assigned homework.
At Plymouth, each confirmand has a sponsor who mentors them through their time of learning. A community of support is also built through various social events that bring the parents and families of our Confirmation students together in this shared journey.
