2011-2012 Choir Program
The purpose of children's musical education at Plymouth is to nurture and instruct young singers in singing to the glory of God. Choir training begins at age three and continues through 8th Grade. Our comprehensive program of music instruction gives students a valuable education that they can take with them wherever they go.
Cherub Choir Age 3-6 Rehearses Sundays, 12:30-1:00 pm Director: Rini Hughes
Plymouth's youngest music students are encouraged to develop a love of singing in a relaxed and fun-filled atmosphere. Group singing of age-appropriate material offers children a way to enjoy choral music while learning special lessons about friendship and faith.
Junior Choir Grades 2-4 (and Reading 1st Graders) Rehearses Sundays, 12:30-1:00 pm Director: Bruce Oelschlager
Our Junior Choir is specially designed singers age seven to nine who are ready to learn the basics of reading musical scores through their practice of choral literature. First graders who are strong readers will be considered on a case-by-case basis for the choir.
Youth Singers Grades 5-8 Rehearses Sundays, 12:30-1:00 pm Director: Lyssandra Walsh
Rehearsals for this group include one-on-one coaching as well as practice singing in small groups and as a choir. Youth Singers receive more advanced instruction in reading music and are exposed to a range of musical styles suitable for worship.
Schedule and Auditions
In the 2011–2012 church year, the choir program for children begins October 2 and continues through mid-May. Registration begins on September 11 and goes through October 30. After October 30, registration for new singers will be open between January 8 and February 26.
Auditions are not required for the children’s choirs. No prior musical experience is necessary, although it is helpful for older singers new to choir.
Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships are available for singers in Grades 2 through 8. The funds may be used for music study of any kind that requires the student to learn to read music. Scholarships require a written application and a relaxed, age-appropriate audition with the Minister of Music.
Those interested in participating in the Children's Choir program are encouraged to contact Bruce Oelschlager, Minister of Music, at the Church Office.
