The Plymouth Church School philosophy embraces developmental principles that encourage each child’s spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth.
Classroom activities at Plymouth Church School are both child- and teacher- initiated, with attention to the children's ages and developmental levels. Activities encouraging independence and self-care, as well as promoting the basic moral values of the Judeo-Christian tradition, are woven throughout the curriculum.
We firmly believe that children need to learn through a multi-sensory approach and be encouraged to ask questions, find answers, and share their discoveries with others. Our children discover the power of creativity to venture beyond the known.
A typical day's schedule includes free and structured time in the classroom, a nutritious snack, circle time, and an opportunity for large motor play. Music, art, and dance specialists meet with our classes weekly. Children are read to daily and meet with our librarian regularly.
Children three and older attend a weekly Chapel program. Lasting fifteen minutes, Chapel includes a welcome prayer, music, stories and discussion on such topics as cooperation and compassion. Religious and cultural holidays important to our school are recognized to affirm the diversity of God’s family. Special guests and the ministers of Plymouth Church participate periodically and parents are always welcome.
Regularly scheduled Parent Coffees allow for exchange between families and faculty on topics of interest. Parent/teacher conferences take place twice a year.
Time for Twos, a program developed for children ages 20-30 months, is designed as a gentle introduction to school. The class encourages children to explore new materials, work in a group, and make transitions. Separation is dealt with gradually; adults leave the classroom when the child is ready, but must remain in the building. Adults take turns assisting the teacher.
