In the sanctuary’s north balcony sits an Aeolian-Skinner organ (four-manual, 59-rank, with 4,162 pipes). At its time of installation in 1866, it was the largest instrument of its kind and remains one of the few Aeolian-Skinner organs to retain its original design. The stained-glass windows, designed by J&R Lamb Studios, tell the story of congregationalism and abolition in the United States, thus including a window for President Abraham Lincoln (who visited Plymouth Church twice during his presidency) and Harriet Beecher Stowe (author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and sister of the late Rev. Henry Ward Beecher).

FAQs

What makes Plymouth unique?

Founded in 1847, Plymouth Church is a historic landmark most notable for its active role in the abolitionist movement. The Plymouth basement, preserved nearly intact from the mid-19th century, served as one of the stops on the Underground Railroad. We are extremely proud of our history and architecture, and therefore appreciate those using the space kindly mind the care and consideration necessary for preserving this beautiful space.

Are there additional amenities provided beyond what is listed above?

No. For the room(s) you are considering renting, if you do not see the amenity listed, it is because we cannot provide it. Our goal is to bundle as many amenities as we can make available to you–it makes for smoother and easier planning for you (and for us!).

Therefore, we try to be as specific as to what we are able to provide for each room. As an example, you may see that some rooms support one (1) microphone; others support three (3). That is because that is the maximum number of microphones our current sound systems can support. Amenities are not transferable from one room to another due to the infrastructural sensitivity of the space.

Is the space available for filming and/or holding?

Yes. When you fill out the Rental Request Form, please indicate if you are interested in filming or catering holding so we may get back to you regarding availability.

Do you provide discounts to nonprofit organizations?

We take into consideration an organization’s mission and financial standing when they are applying for space. Organizations that are not able to afford our standard rack rates are available to apply for an in-kind grant based on a sliding scale using the Rental Request Form below.
