Give with Joy

As we gather for worship online, we kindly invite you to set up your offering online. Plymouth is continuing to work steadfast in its unwavering mission to help us all connect as a community, grow in our faith, and serve those who are most vulnerable. Your offering is key to helping that mission continue.

Lenten Mission Offering | Vocal-NY

Our Lenten goal is to raise $4,000 for a small-but-mighty organization whose NYC location is in Gowanus. Vocal-NY is a movement of low-income people dedicated to preventing AIDS, and supporting the victims of the war on drugs, mass incarceration, and homelessness. They fight for systemic change rooted in justice, compassion, and love. Our mission offering through Lent will help empower the powerless and meet those in need where they are. The men’s Lenten small group is also cooking and delivering meals to Vocal-NY’s Gowanus drop-in center.

A learned Jewish theologian, a Samaritan woman at the well, a blind beggar waiting on the edge of a pool, and two women whose brother has died do not have much in common, but they all end up in conversation with Jesus.  Christ offers them the Spirit, living water, vision, and new life.  If we listen to Jesus, we will hear God offer us the same good gifts.

The feeble gospel looks back to Jesus as our model, our example, and is much concerned with moral injunctions.  It sees his teaching as a fine set of ideals at which to aim.  It may not do much harm but it has no power to change your life:  it is a faith built in sand which leaves you untouched at the center and vulnerable and exposed when life knocks you flat on your face.  The powerful gospel, on the other hand, has at its center the cross and the passion of Jesus and the compassion of God.  It speaks of these truths both as historical and present realities.  It speaks of forgiveness and of dying, of resurrection and new life.
