HOLY WEEK @ PLYMOUTH

More people come to Plymouth on Easter than any other day.  That makes sense, but those who only come for the trumpets without sitting through the silences miss much of the truth.  This Holy Week is not just the story of resurrection, but of resurrection for one who was crucified.  We do not understand hope until we have known sorrow.  The Gospel is tragedy before it is triumph.  If this isn’t a hard week, then it may not be Easter at the end.

Palm/passion Sunday | march 24, 11:00 AM | Sanctuary & Online

Palm Sunday begins with the waving of palms, but the parade does not last. Two days later a woman pours ointment on Jesus’ head, anointing him for burial.  On the first day of Holy Week, we will remember that fake happiness is less than the real joy on the other side of suffering.

Maundy Thursday | march 28, 6:30 PM | reception room

When Jesus handed his friends the bread and cup and told them he was going to die, there was not a dry eye in the room.  We will pray, listen, read scripture, think about this painful story, and share communion at our tables.  Come for dinner at 6:30 PM, and bring a dish to share.

Good Friday | march 29, 7:00 PM | Sanctuary & online

The Christian faith is not a security blanket, it is the cross.  To follow Jesus, we have to hear him cry, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”  Through shadows, silence, confession, and scripture, we hear the journey Jesus takes toward death and consider our place in the story.

Easter Sunday | March 31, 11:00 Am | Sanctuary & Online

Mark’s Gospel does not end with the women dancing at the empty tomb, but with “They said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid” (Mark 16:8).  Easter is hope and joy, but it is not the end of all of our troubles.  We worship on Easter to remember that God offers life in the midst of death.
